Sustaining Peak Performance

Bodies tiring has they reach the summit one final push needed, the heart working harder with each step pumping blood faster and faster, lungs at capacity with each deep breath diffusing oxygen and nutrients across blood vessel layers, the brain with dual blood supply provides a spark, the final impetus to lunge and reach the apex.

The heart of any organisation are its people, circulating blood providing oxygen to various systems, and transporting nutrients to the brain. Leaders need to unblock the arteries and provide the inspiration to keep the heart performing at its peak.

People are NOT inherently lazy and have an innate need for meaning in what they do wanting to believe that results of their efforts matter to others. With a need to feel valued and accepted, people have a natural tendency to express things they are good at and enjoy doing otherwise will easily become unmotivated or disengaged.

To keep teams performing consistently at higher levels, leaders must provide intangible motivational drivers and leverage the tangible organisational hygiene factors ie environment and conditions to “buy” a person’s time, presence and active dedication.

There are five fundamental factors leaders must consider to keep the devotion of people’s hearts, minds or souls and maintain their enthusiasm, ingenuity and commitment:

1. DESIRE — the very essence of the heart beating. If a person doesn’t want or like to be doing something then it will never be done any more than going through the motions. Finding the persons passion (aka @Keith Abraham) and what they desire leading to correct job placement which provides meaningful work and continued engagement.

2. CLARITY — to give focus. Employees need a clear understanding of how their work impacts the mission and vision of the organisation. Defining job key performance expectations and role key result area ultimately provides confidence to make decisions and drive forward.

3. KNOWLEDGE — providing direction. Employees are at their best when there is “healthy tension” to meet clear and reasonable standards by identifying “signature behaviours” through values-based goal setting aligning what is to be done, as importantly what not to do, toward desired achievements.

4. OPPORTUNITY — for the chance to perform. Leaders need to create fluid learning environments to ensure competency and give people the ability to complete their jobs through the provision of adequate work systems, procedures, tools and equipment allowing achievement of SMART “ambitions” and expected performance.

5. PURPOSE — connecting ideals. Most importantly with action, a leaders vision must first be aligned with business strategy shifting “internal drivers” by connecting values and providing the Why (aka @Simon Sinek) to give inspiration.

CHALLENGE ?: When the passion wains and people tire reaching the peak the greatest asset modern leaders need is the ability to arouse enthusiasm. With hearts pounding and bodies tiring what is your go-to too pick up the pace and inspire the final lunge to reach the peak?
